Rockland MA, July 3, 2014 - Globe Composite Solutions is excited to announce that they have been awarded a second U.S. patent (U.S. Patent No. 8765856) for its lead-free HGC (High Gravity Composite) material. This material is part of Globe's portfolio of cost-effective Brandonite® composites and is specifically designed to replace lead or lead-encapsulated materials in a variety of medical, nuclear and security applications.
The HGC material is available in a range of densities and hardnesses to meet the demands of various applications such as X-ray shielding, CT/PET/SPECT scan shielding, baggage inspection, radioisotope shielding and nuclear power generation. Independent testing has shown that Globe's new HGC material provides essentially the same or better radiographic shielding capabilities as other alternative radiation shielding materials.
Unlike lead, Globe's Brandonite® HGCs are non-toxic and eco-friendly. Using a variety of polymers and metallic/non-metallic fillers, Brandonite® HGCs are completely lead-free. Because it is lead free HGC can help manufacturers selling in Europe demonstrate due diligence ensuring compliance with Directive 2011/65/EU (RoHS 2) requiring removal of all lead from medical devices by 22 July 2014. Also, since the material is liquid-cast rather than injection-molded, parts can be made using less-costly molds and requiring less secondary machining operations.“All of these various attributes make Globe's new high-gravity composite material a highly-effective, cost-efficient, more durable, and environmentally friendly replacement for any lead, lead-encapsulated epoxy, or other alternative shielding materials,” said Ron Koniz, Globe’s VP of Business Development.
Over the past few years, Globe Composite Solutions has expanded its material, research, and production capabilities and grown significantly. Globe now operates two production facilities along with four sales offices in three states. Their primary goal is to help customers find ways to improve the overall performance of parts while saving money. As a result, Globe services a diverse group of blue-chip military and industrial customers.
