Globe to Provide Composite Components for Spanish Navy's New S-80 Submarines

Company awarded contract to outfit four diesel-electric submarines

DALLAS TX and ROCKLAND MA, July 16, 2009 – Globe Composite Solutions, Ltd., the leader in providing composite-based solutions for military, industrial and commercial applications, announced today it has been selected by Lockheed Martin’s Undersea Systems business to produce composite structures that will be used on four of the Spanish Navy's new diesel-electric S-80 submarines.

Under the contract, Globe Composite Solutions will supply special acoustic baffle materials for the S-80 submarine’s passive ranging sonar and flank array sonar, both of which are mounted to the submarine’s exterior hull. The baffle panels -a major component of the submarine's acoustic sensors used for undersea detection, location and identification -- will employ Globe’s composite material, which possesses unique signature reduction capabilities to optimize the sonar systems’ performance. The acoustic sensors are part of the S-80's Integrated Combat Management System, which Lockheed Martin has been contracted by Spanish shipbuilder Navantia to develop.  Fabrication and assembly of the composite components will occur at Globe’s Rockland, Mass., facility, with delivery of the first shipset scheduled for the fourth quarter of 2009.

"This award is an important step for our company as we continue to diversify our customer base for defense-related products and expand our reach internationally by providing engineered composite components in the growing international submarine sector," said Carl W. Forsythe, president and CEO of Globe Composite Solutions. "We have worked closely with Lockheed Martin over the past three years to formulate material and design components that meet stringent performance requirements.  We look forward to continuing to expand our relationship with Lockheed Martin as it aggressively pursues the international submarine marketplace."

Lockheed Martin has decades of experience working with the U.S. and international navies to provide high-performance, affordable and supportable combat systems for nuclear and diesel electric submarines.   Its combat system approach focuses on an open systems architecture that leverages commercial technology proven on the U.S. Navy’s Virginia, Seawolf and Los Angeles class submarines.  Lockheed Martin's proven open architecture approach enables navies to easily upgrade systems with new commercial technology and capabilities for enhanced performance and greatly reduced cost over the life of the platform.

Globe Composite Solutions, Ltd. (www.globecomposite.com) is an ISO 9001:2000 certified, privately held company that provides design, material and process expertise to create diverse composite-based solutions that allow its military, industrial and commercial customers to more effectively accomplish their missions.  The company provides turnkey research, design and manufacturing services for prototype and full-scale production needs and holds numerous patents and patents pending related to composite materials and design applications.
