Many airport s and airlines have experienced firsthand the benefits of using Globe to solve a variety of challenges, ranging from extending the life of a particular product, reducing injuries to gate personnnel to saving energy costs.  Here are a few examples of what we’ve done for our clients:

Lightweight Energy-Saving Composite Flat Plates for Baggage Carousels
Globe was approached by a large international airline who was faced with the prospect of having to replace an aging baggage carousel at one of its airport hubs.  The carousel was noisy, required constant service and most of the underlying components had worn out.  Each urethane-coated carousel flat plate was made with 1/4" thick steel and weighed 70 lbs. Also, the plates were peeling and in poor condition. The original manufacturer of the carousel had gone out of business many years ago, so the initial budget to remove and install a new carousel was $700,000.

Globe worked closely with the ground support equipment personnel at the airline to design and produce lighweight carousel flat plates made of a durable composite material and low-friction, high-wear rollers for the carousel understructure.  Since the new flat plates weighed 14 lbs. each, Globe was able to reduce the weight of the entire carousel by 9,800 lbs. (4.9 tons).  Since they were able to substantially reduce the weight of the entire system, the airline experienced an 80% reduction in energy costs.  And, the airline was able to refurbish the entire carousel for under $100,000, thereby saving almost $600,000 in needless replacement costs.

Passenger Boarding Bridge Replacement Components
A major airline was experiencing increased maintenance and escalating replacement costs for the leveling plate passenger boarding bridges a major hub.  The leveling ramps provided by the boarding bridge manufacturer were made of aluminum or steel and were corroding, delaminating or oxidizing due to the humid environment.  Globe was able to make a one-piece corrosion-proof leveling ramp made with a new lightweight durable material that can be textured to be used with or without carpeting.  Additionally, Globe was able to incorporate new design features into the ramp to divert moisture away from the passenger travel area to decrease the likelihood of passenger slipping and/or injury.

Jet Bridge Adapter Ramps
A major airline using a special jet bridge adapter for its aircraft was experiencing increased work-related injuries due to the heavy lifting required to place this heavy (33-40 lbs.) aluminum part.  Over the past 3 1/2 years, the airline had recorded 53 incidents using this adapter mechanism at one airport alone.  Globe was able to design a composite replacement component that was 40% lighter, easier to use and significantly reduced the potential for injury for gate personnel.  Globe also added a non-skid surface with luminescent stripes on the adapter ramps to increase passenger safety as well.
